Respiratory system of fish /Respiration of fish? How do fish breathe in water/ fish breathing? F ish is a gill breather . respiration is aquatic. The respiratory organs are 4 pairs of gills . They are located inside two gill chambers (branchial chambers) . the gill chambers are located on either side of the pharynx in the head region. Each gill chamber is covered by a flap of skin called operculum . the gill chamber opens to the out side by a crescentic opening called gill aperture in front of the pectoral fin and behind the operculum. the posterior margin of the operculum is attached with a membrane called branchiostegal membrane . T he pharynx has 5 pairs of gill slits on the lateral wall of the pharynx and they open into the gill chamber . the wall of the pharynx between the gill slits is called the interbrain-chial septum. There are ,thus fore pairs of interbranchial septa .

what is fish?

INTRODUCTION : fishes are a well defined group of vertebrates. they are the earliest known vertebrates which flourished during the Devonian , about 400million years ago . They form a successful group of animals comprising more than 40,000 species inhabiting all seas, rivers, lakes, canals, dams, muddy water, brackish water , estuaries and all places where there is water . they differ from each other in shape, size and habits, ranging from less than 2cms to 18metres. a very wide distribution of fishes into a variety of habitats has resulted in numerous adaptations in there morphology, physiology and behaviour. Defination : fish is a cold blooded vertebrate, they have gills for respiration and have fins with fin rays and they can swim by the help of fins and body covered by scale.

DID YOU KNOW A NEW SPECIES FOUND IN BLIND CAVE DWEELLING FISSH IN MEGHALAYA? The caves of Meghalaya are home to species of blind fish, a type of loach. Schistura larketensis or the Khung loach is the second species to be discovered from the cave systems of the Jaintia hills. This species is particularly threatened by mining, pollution and hunting in the adjoining areas since its population size is very small. A new species of eyeless fish has been discovered from deep within an extensive cave system in Meghalaya. The small, slender freshwater loach has been described from Krem Khung, a limestone cave situated about 1.5 kilometres from Larket village in the Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya. Locally known as ‘tyrlen’, the scientists have named it Schistura larketensis, the ‘Khung loach’. “When a torchlight is focused on the fish in an aquarium or its natural habitat, there is no visible reaction,” said study author Dandadhar Sarma, professor of Fish Biology and Fis
